Otaio River Farm was formed in late 2006 and established in the South Canterbury village of Otaio, about 25 minutes south of Timaru close to the base of the Hunter Hills. In the winter of 2008 the farm relocated to Glentui, North Canterbury retaining our formation name of “Otaio River.”

Glentui, like Scotland is an area of extremes. Hot dry summers and freezing winters with heavy and frequent rain and regular winter snowfalls. Located only a few hundred metres away from the Mt Thomas Conservation Area it’s as close to the Highlands ancestral surrounds as is possible. Rich white and red clover replaces the heather hills of Scotland.

We aim to produce the finest premium Scottish Highland Beef in the North Canterbury region. Being aware of the growing desire of our clients to limit their “food miles” our market is predominantly local.

In addition to premium retail beef, Otaio River also focuses on breeding Scottish Highland Cattle which are registered with the New Zealand Highland Cattle Society.
